Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It works by mimicking the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1, which helps regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin secretion, reducing glucagon secretion, and slowing gastric emptying. Additionally, semaglutide has been approved at a higher dose for the treatment of obesity and chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight.
